Mutación (2016)

Studies of a Monstera Deliciosa plant as it grows. I am interested in this species because it is one of the few organisms with naturally occurring holes, a mutation that is thought to occur in order to help the large plant from ripping under strong winds and rainfall.

The absence of surface and structure occurs as a structural reinforcement in itself. Almost paradoxical and widely different from contemporary architecture and engineering practice, in which structures are often times approached with a “more is more” attitude.

Nature tends to ascribe to “less is more” (the modernist phrase attributed to Mies van der Rohe). As a reference to this I paint the plants white before photographing them.
